Chicken skin? Nope, keratosis pilaris. Either you, or someone you know, likely battles this common skin condition. Kp shows up as patches of rough, bumpy, sometimes red skin usually on upper arms, thighs, buttocks and cheeks. A buildup of keratin -- a hard protein found in skin, hair, and nails that protects from harmful substances and infection – forms a plug, blocking the opening of the hair follicle. When these bumps become irritated it can cause redness.
Though this skin condition does seem to improve in warmer months, there is no known cure. Not to worry, certain steps can be taken to lessen the severity of Kp, tone down the bumps and irritation, and restore body confidence.
Keratosis pilaris symptoms are made worse by dryness, lack of enough water and healthy fats in the diet, and by some personal care products. Synthetic ingredients in cosmetic products often irritate Kp, and can cause bumps to worsen. Yet one more reason to avoid harmful synthetic ingredients and go natural.
Exfoliation is key in warding off bumpy skin. Gentle, regular exfoliation removes dry dead skin cells, and keeps skin soft and smooth. Just remember to exfoliate gently. Harsh scrubbing will only irritate skin. Skin Cranberry Orange Salt Scrub is a sumptuous blend of sea salt and fruit to gently remove buildup and leave skin fresh, soft and healthy. Skin Fruity Face Scrub uses fruit enzymes and mild "scrubbies" from ground apricot kernel to polish away dead skin cells.
Hydrate to ward of dryness and bumps. Drinking plenty of water will help to keep you hydrated from the inside out. And be sure to use a rich, moisturizer on affected areas, especially in dry winter months. Skin Naked Skin unscented body lotion provides gentle, long-lasting protection and moisture. Sea buckthorn oil is said to help with Kp and is in Skin Seaberry Restoratiave Face Cream.
Cleanse gently. Skin Naked body wash in unscented and super gentle. Perfect for cleansing and comforting irritated skin.
Using a humidifier in your home during the dry season can help to keep skin hydrated and supple. And once summer time hits, a little time outdoors soaking up some Vitamin D can greatly improve your Kp. Just be sure not to over do it, 10-15 minutes of unprotected sun protection is plenty. After that use a mineral-based sunscreen to adequately protect from sun damage.
Following these simple steps will have you ready for skin-baring season in no time flat.
