Eating for Healthy Skin

I can always tell when I've not been eating right or getting enough sleep. My face will show it! Luckily, the damage is easy to undo by getting back to basics. A healthy diet is essential in keeping you and your skin in top shape. Eating organic as much as possible will help to limit your exposure to toxins and ward off acne and dryness.

Toxins are said to be the number one component in the aging of our skin. The liver’s job is to destroy toxins that enter our body, but with the heavy toxic burden most of us carry today it has a hefty job to do. This is when free radicals form and cause damage to cells in various body parts, including the skin. This results in more breakouts, skin allergies and wrinkles.

But you can still do a lot to improve the health of your skin. If you are using nontoxic skincare and cosmetics you should go one step further and take a look at what you are putting into your body. Conventionally produced fruits and vegetables, meats and dairy products are contaminated with fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, artificial preservatives and contaminated water. It makes that “healthy” meal you fix for dinner look rather dismal.

Eating organically produced foods is not only better for our health but also the health of our planet. Organic farmers help to care for the earth by not using toxic chemicals on their crops and livestock and preserving the soil and waterways.

Now that you are eating healthier, bolster your nontoxic diet with a few additions. Flax oil and fish oil capsules are not only good for cardiac health but are high in fatty acids that help to keep the skin moisturized. Antioxidants fight free radicals, which cause premature aging, and can be found in green tea, pomegranate seeds and berries. In fact, when strolling through the organic produce section, reach for lots of deep, rich colors and remember, variety is the spice of life! Be sure to drink plenty of filtered water too as it will assist your body in flushing out toxins.

Going toxin-free inside and out will keep your skin looking younger and healthier and your body feeling great. Our planet will thank you too. Now I'm off to bed for my beauty sleep!
